Pet Victims of the Joplin Tornado Need Your Help

The deadliest tornado in the United States since 1947 has wiped out 25% of Joplin Missouri. The hospital is destroyed, the high school will not reopen and homes just disappeared.

In all this families are trying to piece together their lives. Trying to find each other, make sure their families are safe and this includes their pets. Sleep, clothes to wear and food to eat all seem secondary when your family is missing or hurt.

Pets give comfort in times of stress and are an outlet for emotions to soothe the heart and soul. But many are missing right now, many are hurt and many need medical care. You can help my donating to the cause.

Pet and Kennel Supply has set up a monetary fund at GoFundMe.com called Joplin Missouri Displaced Pets. Their minimum goal is $5,000 to help raise money to supply food and medical supplies for the pet victims of the Joplin Tornado.

Lend a helping hand in this time of tragedy. Donate today.

ProMeris flea/tick Prevention Pulled by Pfizer Due to Side Effects

April 21st, 2011

An autoimmune skin disease call Pemphigus foliaceus, or PF, can be a result of using the flea and tick treament ProMeris for Dogs (Metaflumizone-amitraz), thus the product was discontinued by Pfizer.

According to the original article in Veterinary Practice News

PF is the most common spontaneously occurring autoimmune skin disease of dogs and typically displays as lesions on the face, nasal planum and ears. The reaction is rare but serious, says the study’s lead author, Thierry Olivry, DrVet, PhD, Dipl. ACVD, of North Carolina State University.

Since ProMeris’ introduction to U.S. and European markets in 2007, veterinarians have reported this adverse reaction, but previous case studies failed to use a drug-reaction probability scale and therefore an ADR couldn’t be definitively identified.

What is unusual is even though this product has been linked to this disease, that causes autoimmune conditions, lesions on the face, nasal planum, and the ears the product is not being recalled immediately. Orders are still be shipped until September 2011.

Why would you, or your vet continue to give a product to a dog that not only been shown to cause health problems, but has been pulled by the company? Doesn’t make any sense.

There are safe alternatives to Promeris :

Frontline Plus

Advantage Flea & Tick Prevention

K-9 Advantix

Revolution

Natural Flea Protection is an safe, non-toxic alternative to seriously consider as part, or all of your flea and tick protection.

Cedar Oil Spray

Citronella Oil

I.G. Regulator (disrupts flea cycle in carpets, furniture etc. )

Dog Joke: Dogs and the Lightbulb

April 15th, 2011

Ha, Ha that was a funny joke, tell me another

Saw this joke “How many Dogs Does it take to Change a Light Bulb” on the Dogs Fun Time Blog and I had to share. I rarely use other people’s material for my blog, but this was just too good to pass up.Think about how your dog would answer based on their breed. Make sure to visit the Dogs Fun Time Blog for the rest of the dogs breeds, I just picked my favorites.

So,….

How many Dogs Does it take to Change a Light Bulb?

Afghan Hound: Light bulb? What light bulb?

Golden Retriever: The sun is shining, the day is young, we’ve got our whole lives ahead of us, and you’re worrying about a burned out light bulb?

Border Collie: Just one. And I’ll replace any wiring that’s not up to code. (over achiever)

Greyhound: It isn’t moving. Who cares?

Poodle: I’ll just blow in the border collie’s ear and he’ll do it. (ooo la la)

Rotweiller: Make me!

Shih tzu: Pul-leeze, dahling, I have servants for that kind of thing. (I know Shih tzu’s like this)

Labrador Retriever: Oh, me, me!!!! Pleeeeeasze let me change the light bulb. Can I? Can I? Huh? Huh? Can I?

Australian Shepherd: Put all the bulbs in a little circle …

Jack Russell Terrier: I’ll just pop it in while I’m bouncing off the walls and furniture. (that’s my dog!)

Doberman Pinscher: While it’s dark, I’m going to sleep on the couch.

Mastiff: Mastiffs are NOT afraid of the dark.

Pug: Er, two. Or maybe one. No — on second thought, make that two. Is that OK with you?

German Shepherd: I’ll change it as soon as I’ve led these people from the dark, check to make sure I haven’t missed any, and make just one more perimeter patrol to see that no one has tried to take advantage of the situation.

Beagle: Light bulb? Light bulb? That thing I ate was a light bulb?

Chihuahua: Yo quiero Taco Bulb.

Pointer: I see it! There it is! Right there!

Siberian Husky: Light bulb?!? I ate the light bulb, and the lamp, and the coffee table it sat on, and the carpet under the coffee table and …

Cat: You need light to see?

So how would your dog answer? Make sure to leave your dogs breed and answer in the comment section.

Natural Alternatives to Flea and Insect Prevention in Pets

April 14th, 2011
Natural Insect protection for your pet

Natural Methods of Insect Prevention

There are many ways protect your dog against fleas, mosquitoes, ticks and other bothersome bugs and insects. You can use a topical product such as Frontline Plus, sprays, or even dips. But most of these products contain chemicals that may be harmful to your pet.

Thankfully for those looking for natural ways to prevent fleas, ticks, mosquitoes and other insects there are alternatives.

Some are more effective than others, and many times a combination needs to be used. But it’s worth investigating the alternatives and using natural pet products when they are available.

A Normal Day in the Life of A DeerHound

February 16th, 2011

Local Dog Makes Good, Rappahannock News 2010

“Hickory” (GCH Foxcliffe Hickory Wind), a five year old Scottish Deerhound, isn’t the typical foo-foo show dog that lives on plush pillows, has ribbons in her hair and gets groomed all day. Not in the least. For one, her hair coat is wiry and the judges like it that way.  Secondly she weighs 85 lbs, not necessarily a lap dog. Wow, what a change from Pomeranians.

She isn’t a toy dog that is carried around in a small purse as a fashion statement. Hickory is lives on a 50 acre farm in Warrenton, Va. and enjoys being a dog, not just any dog, but a site hound dog who’s natural instinct and past time is chasing after deer and rabbits.

Her strong neck is characteristic of the breed that is capable of bringing down stags. But her owners will be quick to point out that Deerhounds are more interested in the chase than the kill.

Hickory has been praised for her gait which is indicative of a powerful hips and hindquarters. She does move very nicely as you can watch in the official Westminster videos in Best of Breed or the Best of Group- Hounds.

Her handler, Angela Lloyd really did her justice in showcasing her natural athleticism and almost floating movement across the Garden floor. It paid off as Hickory was the first Scottish Deerhound to win Best in Show at the Westminster show. I’ll bet she gets some extra treats after this. Hickory isn’t the only champion, Angela won the Junior Handler Title at Westminster in 1998. I wonder if that has ever been done before?

Hickory takes Best in Show at the 2011 Westminster Dog Show

Hickory takes Best in Show at the 2011 Westminster Dog Show

“Hickory” the Scottish Deerhound is the 135th Best in Show winner of the Westminster Kennel Club dog show. It is wonderful to see such a regal dog win this award. She was born in December of 2005 and has been an outstanding dog ever since.

She was the 5th ranked hound in 2010  and won the National Specialty  in 2010.  (Gotta love a dog show with bagpipes.)

Characterized as “the most perfect creature” by Sir Walter Scott this wiry coated greyhound-like dog has great speed and endurance in the field. They are ready to forgive and remember kindness and although they are too big to be lapdogs their spontaneous nature puts them right in your lap and hearts.

They are big, busy as a puppy, and being very stoic will most like NOT bring back the stick you threw, but look at you with an attitude that”  I’m above that, you can get it.”
