What do you get when you cross a Basset Hound with an Alpine Spaniel? A Clumber Spaniel, or that’s how the American Kennel Club thinks this dog originated.
“Breaker” is about two years old, and is already a champion, winning a Best in Breed placing. He loves all kinds of dog toys, but his favorite is a orbi ball.
Clumber Spaniels are one of the original nine recognized breeds by the AKC, established in 1884. But the origins go back to the 1700′s in France. Often referred to as a “Gentleman’s hunting dog”, they are used in England for hunting quail. Clumbers have thick ears, and fur which is designed to go through thick bushes.
Although not natural swimmers they can be taught to swim and some of “Breakers” traits is he sheds, drools and snores. But he’s such a sweet looking dog you can’t help but love him.
The name Clumber derives from the Duke of Newcastle’s 3,800 acres estate Clumber Park in Nottinghamshire England. If this sounds familiar it is the location of Sherwood Forest, where the legendary Robin Hood once roamed.
